Oh Mand, I am so very sorry to hear this. I was friends with him on fb years ago and then he left fb I think. He was always very sweet and charming. My condolences to you and your family.

I think we all got caught up with other matters and forgot to come back to discuss!
This book was very enjoyable. A light read but with an unexpectedly profound message
that resonates with me.

There were many lines within the book that truly touched me.
"Happy to just be", "Happiness is an inside job" (true for me on so many levels)
"Everything is about perception. People's perception of other people change and our
perception of ourselves change" "We set out to be one thing...and we become another".
"there is always redemption and there is always a place to call home".

One line really speaks loudly to me of late..."That is what family is all about...loving unconditionally".

I am glad I read it. Thanks for the suggestion Maria.

6  Forums / General Discussion / Re: Virtual Book Club Book Suggestions on: May 05, 2018, 10:48:20 am
I have another suggestion. "The Spinning Heart".
Won a lot of awards and looks like a potentially good read.

https://www.amazon.com/Spinning-Heart-Novel-Donal-Ryan/dp/1586422243/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525538647&sr=8-1&keywords=Spinning+Heart

"In the aftermath of Ireland's financial collapse, dangerous tensions surface in an Irish town. As violence flares, the characters face a battle between public persona and inner desires. Through a chorus of unique voices, each struggling to tell their own kind of truth, a single authentic tale unfolds.

The Spinning Heart speaks for contemporary Ireland like no other novel. Wry, vulnerable, all-too human, it captures the language and spirit of rural Ireland and with uncanny perception articulates the words and thoughts of a generation. Technically daring and evocative of Patrick McCabe and J.M. Synge, this novel of small-town life is witty, dark and sweetly poignant.

Donal Ryan's brilliantly realized debut announces a stunning new voice in fiction."

Yay! Shall we stop at a certain point and discuss or just read right thru. It looks like a quick read.

I am up to Chapter 10. So far Clem speaks to me! Goes to show that even people who appear to have nothing in common have surprisingly similar thoughts and feelings.

Not an experienced "book club person" so not certain what the best process is!

Won't discuss specifics so as not to ruin anyone's experience.

This year I had my heart set on going on an expedition to Antarctica departing from Montevideo, Uruguay.  But the boss put the kibosh on that when I asked for three weeks off.  Boo.  So instead I am going 180° in the opposite direction toward the north pole, or just shy of it anyway - Svalbard, which sits just below 80°N in the Arctic Ocean.  It will be a polar bear/wildlife expedition cruise.  After that, I fly to Ilulissat, Greenland (by way of Oslo and Copenhagen), where I will do lots of hiking, checking out glaciers, fjords, icebergs, the icecap, and hopefully some northern lights in Kangerlussuaq.

No, the Mavericks are not playing Greenland... as far as I know!

Exciting! Take lots of photos of those glaciers, fjords etc!

A good friend of mine invited me to visit friends whom I've met to visit their home in Toronto. I've never been to Canada so I'm excited! The plan is to go in August for a week.

Very cool Lila. I just met some lovely people visiting here from Toronto at a concert last week. Have a great time!

We're planning to go visit relatives in Croatia this summer. Should be pretty interesting. We'll spend a few days on the coast as well at the end of our trip.

That sounds exciting! I saw an International House Hunters episode where a couple got a very lovely apartment there.

Welcome to the forum Gilbert!

Enjoying the book so far. Middle of chapter five now. Don't want to say too much and give anything away lol. I quite like Clem.

Ruth...sorry to hear about that femur! I hope you are well on the mend and have the best time at your show.

Yes, I get the "validation" thing. When I came here, I was so thrilled to find others who "got" the power of Raul's voice! Then, it made me sad coz for ages it felt like that voice was my own secret treasure lol. Then....I went back to thrilled and even added a touch or dash of amazed. It's great to share this joyful bond.

Hugs

What's your pleasure, Vac-kay or Stay-kay?

I have to say....more and more, I like the "Stay-kay". Just don't have the urge to roam and wander as I once did.
Lucky to live in a fairly entertaining place and then there are the cat children...I hate to leave Chico and Lico LOL
Seriously, nothing better than hanging out at home with a cat on your lap, another at your side; reading a book, listening to music, checking out the forum ♥
