Northern Sinfonia Feature on Worldwide Release of Raul Malo's Album

A performance by Raul Malo and Northern Sinfonia of new and classic songs from around world, recorded at The Sage Gateshead, is set for worldwide release on February 6.

The special one-off concert was recorded live at the North East music venue as part of its annual SummerTyne Americana Festival in July 2011. The album release will be followed by a UK tour with Transatlantic Sessions, which comes to The Sage Gateshead on February 9.

It reflects on music from Raul’s time with The Mavericks and solo years as well as featuring new and classic material, backed by renowned orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, Northern Sinfonia, and conducted by Paul Gambill. The rhythm section featured young accordionist Michael Guerra.

Highlights include Dance the Night Away, his two recent solo albums ‘Lucky One’ and ‘Moonlight Kiss’ as well as Rogers & Hammerstein’s ‘Indian Love Call’ and Latin classics ‘Guantanamera’. The release, on Fantasy Records/Decca, follows his critically acclaimed ‘Lucky One’ and ‘Sinners & Saints’ albums.

Raul will make a welcome return to The Sage Gateshead as part of the Transatlantic Sessions touring festival, long established among the jewels in the crown of Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival.

Led by traditional-style fiddler Aly Bain and dobro legend Jerry Douglas, they continue to revisit shared roots and forge new common ground between today’s finest Celtic and Americana musicians.

This year’s performance features special guests including Jerry Douglas, Aly Bain, Raul Malo, Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson, Tim O’Brien, Declan O’Rourke, Ruth Moody, John Doyle, Danny Thompson, Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker, Donald Shaw, James MacKintosh, and Bruce Molsky.
